Disability Advisory and Support Service (DASS)

The Disability Advisory and Support Service (DASS) helps prospective students with a disability get support in place, ready for when they arrive at the University.

Support available

We encourage prospective students to seek support as early as possible to smooth the transition to university. A disability is defined as any condition that has a significant, adverse and long-term effect on a person's ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

DASS supports students with a range of difficulties including but not limited to:

  • autism spectrum condition (ASC)
  • dyslexia, dyspraxia and other specific learning difficulties
  • mental health difficulties
  • mobility impairments
  • sensory impairments
  • unseen disabilities like epilepsy, HIV, AIDS and chronic fatigue.

Competency standards and reasonable adjustments

At The University of Manchester, we are committed to supporting students to access our regulated health or social care courses, provided they meet the competency standards for their profession. DASS and Occupational Health act as advisory services and may recommend reasonable adjustments.

Decisions about the feasibility of implementing reasonable adjustments lie with the course leadership team and placement areas. Decisions will take account of the Equality Act 2010 and best practice standards, as well as the competency standards of your course, individual needs and whether any adjustments would be reasonable within the placement setting.

The course leadership team and placement areas will need to consider health and safety factors, patient safety and protection of the public.
