We understand the environment’s vital role in the wellbeing of the planet, people and all life.
By contributing to the University’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy we aim to embed sustainability at the heart of our operations, activities.
The strategy sets out the University’s commitment to using the full range of our knowledge and influence, both in our local communities and across the world, to lead progress towards a healthier, more sustainable world. Aiming to reduce carbon emissions, promote responsible procurement and consumption behaviours, and mitigate the negative impacts of our operations and activities.
The University has also signed up to the Concordat for the Environmental Sustainability of Research and Innovation Practice which represents a shared ambition for the UK to continue delivering cutting-edge research, but in a more environmentally responsible and sustainable way.

LEAF is a set of standards designed by University College London (UCL) to help labs reduce environmental impact without compromising research quality. Labs are required to meet specific criteria across categories such as Waste and Recycling, Water, People, Equipment, and Research Quality.

Easy Eco for All Handbook
Developed by Harriet Bickley, an FBMH mental health researcher, this handbook provides guidance on how to lead a more sustainable lifestyle both on- and off-campus. It includes tips on recycling, travelling and purchasing.
iNaturalist Biodiversity Project
Everyone is invited to take part in our Biodiversity On Campus project by uploading sightings of plants and animals around campus via the iNaturalist app. Each sighting contributes to a database that can be used by scientists and the University to inform future actions to increase biodiversity and the conservation of species. You can also log sightings in your local area and contribute to other projects.
Green spaces on campus
The University encourages staff, students and the local community to explore and enjoy the beauty, value and function of the trees around us and experience the physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits associated with nature and the outdoors.
We have worked closely with Urban Green and City of Trees to develop three distinct trails that highlight 50 of the 1,500 trees across Oxford Road Campus, North Campus and Whitworth Park. The trail has been designed as a web-based app which can be used by anyone with a smartphone or handheld device.

Teaching and learning
Sustainability in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
We deliver inductions, develop activities to promote reflection on sustainability-related themes and, where possible, encourage students to deliver projects on these themes to find out more.
Several of our students are part of the Faculty’s Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC) team. This provides students with the opportunity to assess how well our health professional school integrates planetary health and sustainability into its curriculum, research, and policies. This enables us to highlight strengths, find gaps, and push for improvements in environmental sustainability within healthcare education.
