Postgraduate research at the University of Manchester

Postgraduate research

We are ranked as a leading centre for research power in pharmacy within the UK in the national Research Excellence Framework (UoA3 REF 2014).

Our postgraduate researchers have the opportunity to be involved in a thriving research community comprising postgraduate students from throughout the UK and, indeed, across the world.

We possess outstanding research facilities and resources for postgraduate students, with extensive support systems and training programmes in place to ensure both the academic and personal development of all of our researchers.

We host a highly dynamic, student-led environment with an enthusiastic Postgraduate Research Committee that actively contributes to the postgraduate society within the Faculty.

Andrés Olivares-Morales

"I'm very pleased about making the right decision about coming to Manchester to undertake my PhD because of the opportunities that I've been given, such as being able to present my research in various scientific meetings in Europe and the US."

Studentships and funding

We offer numerous routes to PhD funding, including project-specific studentships.

PhD funding for our pharmacy programmes is primarily provided through the UK Research Councils (eg BBSRC, MRC and EPSRC) and industry (eg AstraZeneca and Pfizer).

A number of funded projects provide the opportunity to conduct research within a commercial setting. These projects are advertised as CASE (Collaborative Awards in Sciences and Engineering) studentships.

Funding for non-EU applicants includes the Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Awards (DHPA) and Commonwealth Scholarships.
