How to apply

Applying for a place on a postgraduate research programme requires some advance preparation.

Applications for postgraduate research are submitted online through the University's online admissions application system.

Read the steps listed below before you complete your online application and, if you have any questions, please contact the Doctoral Academy Admissions Team.

Application guide

Prior to applying you must have:

  • Checked you meet our entry requirements
  • Identified the name of the project or programme you're applying for
  • Contacted the listed project supervisor 
  • Considered funding for your project or programme

You must also have:

  • A supporting statement
  • References
  • Certificates and transcripts
  • Official English Language certificate
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Incomplete, late or unsolicited applications will not be considered.

Once you have decided on your project, spoken to your supervisor and have all of your information ready, you can apply online:

When completing the application form, please make sure you use the below guidance and complete all fields accurately:

  • Level of Study
    • Postgraduate Research.
  • Entry Year
    • Select the academic year you wish to study in.
    • For example, January and April 2025 are in the 2024/25 academic year, while September 2025 is in the 2025/26 academic year.
  • The academic programme is the name of the postgraduate research degree linked to the project or programme you are applying for and can be searched via the application form.
  • If you don't already know the title of the degree, speak to your supervisor or contact our Doctoral Academy Admissions team who will be able to help.
  • For funded programmes, search for the programme title (such as BBSRC, MRC).
  • In Section 6 of the application form you must state the name of the project supervisor and provisional project title.
  • You can indicate up to two supervisors.
  • This must be entered in the following format:
    • Name of Supervisor(s) – Project Title
  • In Section 9 you'll need to provide details of how you intend to fund your postgraduate research.
  • It is important to give as much detail as possible about your known or expected funding arrangements.
  • Funded:
    • If you are applying for a fully funded studentship, you must follow the instructions on the specific webpage for the programme.
  • Other funding
    • If you have other sources of funding or are considering other forms of funding, please indicate this here and include your scholarship letter, if you have one.
  • Self-funded
    • If you have not secured or do not intend to apply for funding to cover the cost of your studies, you should select "No".
    • In this case, you do not need to provide any further details and we will assume that you are funding your studies yourself.

Your application form must be accompanied by a number of supporting documents and these need to be uploaded prior to the advertised deadlines.

Without all the required documents submitted at the time of application, your application will not be processed and we cannot accept responsibility for late or missed deadlines. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

  • Official English Language certificate
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Application timeline

Key dates in the application process

It's important to be aware of key dates in the application and admissions process.

These dates vary depending on the project or funded programme but the outline timeline below may provide a helpful guide to support your preparation.

  • September: Application portal opens for the next academic year and advertised 'directly funded' and 'self-funded' projects can be applied for
  • October to November: Most of our funded studentships and scholarships launch and open for applications.
  • November to January: Application deadlines for most of our funded studentships and scholarships.
  • January to March: Interviews start to take place from January. Informal discussions and interviews may take place prior to formal interviews.
  • June: Final application deadline for September start.
  • October: Final application deadline for January start.
  • January: Final application deadline for April start.

Application deadlines

Deadlines depend on when you want to start your research.

The deadline for submitting an application for postgraduate research in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health depends on when you intend to start your research.

If you are applying for one of our funded programmes, please refer to the deadlines detailed on the dedicated programme page.

The final application deadlines for 2025 are:

  • January 2025 entry: Tuesday, 15 October 2024
  • April 2025 entry: Wednesday, 15 January 2025
  • September 2025 entry: Sunday, 15 June 2025
