Equality, diversity and inclusion

Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is fundamental to the success of the University.

We know that diversity strengthens our research community, leading to enhanced research creativity, productivity and quality, and societal and economic impact.

We actively encourage applicants from diverse career paths and backgrounds and from all sections of the community, regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation and transgender status.

We support applications from those returning from a career break or other roles, consider offering flexible study arrangements (including part-time: 50%, 60% or 80%, depending on the project/funder), and offer carer support funds for conferences and peer support networks for parents and carers.

All appointments are made on merit.

The University of Manchester and our external partners are fully committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Targeted studentships

Committed to equality of opportunity

We are working to ensure our student cohort reflects the diverse communities we serve.

We have introduced a range of positive measures to assist in achieving these commitments, recognising in particular that students from Asian/Asian British and Black/Black British backgrounds are currently underrepresented on our programmes, in postgraduate research and across the UK university sector.

These measures follow a review of our recruitment processes and identifying opportunities to implement these actions through our highly competitive funded schemes.

To address this particular underrepresentation, each year we offer Excellence in Diversity PhD Scholarships.
