General information

The international summer schools will take place from Monday, 22 July to Friday, 9 August 2024. Applications are now open.

The following information offers guidance on eligibility requirements, the application process, accommodation and what to expect from your stay in Manchester.

Fees and finance

The fee for attending a summer school is £2,500 for associate universities. For individual applicants please contact siss@manchester.ac.uk for fee information.

The fee covers:

  • course fees;
  • accommodation in a single room with a shared kitchen;
  • group airport transfers on arrival and departure to/from Manchester Airport (dates to be confirmed);
  • orientation and farewell events, as well as selected social activities.

In addition, you will need to budget for living costs to cover food, travel and personal expenses.

Insurance

You are required to arrange your own travel and health insurance before arriving in Manchester.

Social activities

In addition to the academic programme, you will get the opportunity to experience a number of social activities.

We will introduce you to our current students who will accompany you on social events. These events are optional to attend, however they will incur no extra cost.

Current students will act as ambassadors and answer any questions you may have. They will help you make the most of your time here and experience the city as a University of Manchester student would.

Free time at the weekends will be allocated for independent travel and study. We strongly advise that you wait to receive the course timetable before making any travel plans.

University and city life

The University of Manchester is located in the centre of Manchester. Manchester Airport is a 20 minute drive away. The main train station, where you can travel across the country to all popular destinations, is just a 15 minute walk away from campus.

Main city centre attractions like museums, shopping centres, theatres and sports venues are all in walking distance of the University campus, as are food outlets, bars and restaurants.

Accommodation

You will be allocated a single room with a shared kitchen close to campus.

We will allocate you a room in a flat with other summer schools students. We aim to place you with students in the same summer school, however we can’t always guarantee that this will be the case.

What to bring:

  • An umbrella, as Manchester can sometimes be a rainy city!
  • A good waterproof coat to keep you warm and dry.
  • Sturdy footwear as we’ll be walking around the city and sometimes in the countryside.
  • A backpack or daypack for carrying your belongings when on field trips.
  • Sun protection cream, a hat and sunglasses for good weather.
  • Warm clothes such as jumpers, coats and hats for night time activities, outdoor excursions and bad weather.
