Distance learning
You can take advantage of convenient distance learning options for a number of our postgraduate and continuing professional development (CPD) programmes.
Our distance learning courses
You will be able to build the knowledge and skills you need through self-study using materials delivered online. Some programmes offer a combination of onsite and distance learning, which is known as blended learning.
Most of our distance learning programmes are available to you whether you live in or near Manchester, elsewhere in the UK or in another country.
They include taught master's courses and postgraduate certificates and diplomas, as well as master of research (MRes) courses, research training and CPD short courses.
Our online learning platform
Most of our distance learning programmes are delivered through our reliable virtual learning environment, Blackboard, which can be accessed from anywhere in the world.
You can access your course units and study materials through Blackboard, with core materials written by your course tutor.
You can also find links to reading materials that are accessible online through either external sites or The University of Manchester Library, including journal articles, ebooks and individual chapters.
In addition, we sometimes use other media to deliver programme material, such as podcasts, videos and filmed lectures.
You'll have plenty of opportunities to work with other students through interactive media including discussion boards, wikis, tests and quizzes. You are also able to interact with your tutor through live web seminars and discussion boards.
We'll assess your learning in a number of ways, including essays, reports and discussion board tasks.
Skills units that are similar to those offered to on-campus master's and PhD students are also available to distance learners, meaning that you'll have the chance to refine your academic writing, presentation and research skills if you choose to.
