Research theme: children and families living with mental illness

The Mental Health Research Group (MHRG) has been successful in obtaining a number of National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) grants for research exploring children and young people's mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Our research has focused on topic areas such as self-care, perceptions of risk in inpatient care, and the children of parents with mental illness. Via systematic syntheses and in-depth work with young people, we are successfully increasing the evidence base for new services.

All of our work has involved significant input from and/or collaboration with young people, either directly or through advocates such as the charities YoungMinds, local young carers groups and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

We have strong links with local clinicians and colleagues in the Manchester Institute of Education. Our research has involved collaborations with Kings College London, the University of York, Bristol University, the University of Bath and Cardiff University, among others.
