- Assessing unmet supportive care needs and quality of life in patients with cutaneous invasive melanoma -

Abstract

Cutaneous invasive melanoma is a cancer arising in the pigment cells of the skin that has spread below the epidermis and is potentially fatal. Management is surgical with out-patient based follow-up. Average life expectancy depends on tumour thickness, but can vary unpredictably as for other cancers. The prognostic uncertainty may cause distress to patients after treatment of invasive melanoma, but little is known about their unmet needs. Hence the aim of this cross-sectional study is to assess the supportive care needs and quality of life of patients with invasive cutaneous melanoma. Up to 470 patients will be asked to complete a range of needs assessment, quality of life, anxiety, depression and health utilisation questionnaires. Emerging issues and other aspects of illness experience will be further explored by qualitative interviews in a subsample of about 20-25 patients. Results will provide evidence of patient unmet supportive care needs, which can further influence the design and development of supportive care services for these patients.
