Are there any benefits to patients with active progressing cancer of attending regular outpatient follow-up appointments? A qualitative study.
Abstract
Research and policy documents suggest that follow-up for cancer may soon be curtailed or modified for resource-related reasons. Patients’ views on this issue are unclear, particularly those of patients with active, progressing disease. The aim of this study was to explore the perspectives of patients with advanced cancer who were not undergoing anti-cancer treatment on whether they were being followed up appropriately at a cancer centre. Taped qualitative interviews were performed with six patients and were analysed thematically. The data obtained suggest that patients preferred to be followed up at the cancer centre because of the availability of specialist knowledge, skills and diagnostic facilities. These factors outweighed the burden of travel. Larger scale research into this topic is needed. (completed 2005)Members of the project
