An exploration of information needs of mammography screening among Chinese women in the UK

Abstract

Aim:
To explore information needs on mammography screening among Chinese women in the UK

Methodology description:
Three linked stages are involved in the study, with each stage building on findings from the previous stage. In the first stage, qualitative in-depth interviews are used to explore Chinese women’s information needs on mammography screening in a social cultural context. Based on findings from the first stage, an information package responsive to patients reported needs will be developed. A small-scale pre and post test study will be conducted, in order to evaluate if the information package meets Chinese women’s information needs on mammography screening.

Sample:
This study targets women who identify themselves as Chinese and living in the UK, with an age range from 50 to 70 (in accordance with breast screening age in the UK National Health Service). Samples are mainly recruited from Chinese societies in Manchester.

Findings:
The study is in progress and no findings are available at present.

Conclusion and implications for further research:
As one of the most rapidly increasing ethnic groups in the UK, it is necessary to understand Chinese women’s information needs on mammography screening. Research findings may not only help health professionals to provide an appropriate information service, but also improve Chinese women’s understanding of this service and enable fully informed consent.
