Prognosis in Palliative Care Study (PiPS)
Abstract
Clinicians are poor at estimating survival in patients with advanced cancer. This study aims to develop a prognostic index to improve (or replace) clinician estimates of survival, with a secondary aim of determining whether repeated prognostic assessments are more accurate than single assessments at predicting survival. The expected outcome of this study will be a validated prognostic index (the PiPS) for use in patient with advanced cancer based on easily obtainable patient data. The research is a multi-centre, prospective, observational inception-cohort study of consecutive eligible referrals to participating palliative care units. The study will take place at four locations (London, Surrey, Derby and Manchester), comprising seven different services. A total of 1200 patients are expected to be recruited over two years.Members of the project
