Predictors of patients' use of cancer support groups: A prospective study
Abstract
This prospective, quantitative study will investigate which demographic, clinical and psychosocial variables predict cancer patients’ use of cancer support groups. It will particularly consider why older patients, men, low socioeconomic status (SES) patients, and black and ethnic minorities are typically underrepresented among group participants. It will also assess whether attendance at groups appears to be associated with better quality of life. The study will be conducted in collaboration with Christie Hospital. Patients will be recruited shortly after diagnosis and followed up for a year. Findings from the study will be used to develop an intervention to increase support group uptake where appropriate, to be evaluated in line with the MRC’s Framework for Evaluating Complex Interventions.Duration of the project
