How do circumstances around death at home affect bereaved caregivers?

Abstract

This study investigates how informal carers’ psychological and physical bereavement outcomes are associated with patients’ place of death, having the preference for place of death fulfilled and carers’ assessment of quality of end of life care and symptom control. The study is being conducted with five UK hospice at home services, under the umbrella of the National Forum for Hospice at Home, and in collaboration with the Centre for Family Research, University of Cambridge. Data collection includes routine data from hospice at home services, postal survey of bereaved carers and death certificate information from the Office of National Statistics. It is hoped that the study will form the basis for a larger, prospective study into how circumstances around patients’ death affect carer bereavement and how palliative and generic services can influence these.
