Nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy: Validation of a short clinical scale

Abstract

Nausea and Vomiting following chemotherapy is often not assessed effectively, which is partly due to the limited availability of clinically appropriate scales. The MASCC Anti-emesis Tool (MAT), is a short 8-item scale developed during collaboration between Merck & Co Inc. and MASCC (Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer). The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the MAT scale for reliability and validity in a clinical setting. Other objectives include collecting data from a large and heterogeneous group of cancer patients in order to estimate the incidence of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting, to assess the cross-cultural transferability of the scale and to explore the meaning of ‘nausea’ for patients. Initial results from the first phase of this project have provided preliminary evidence in support of the reliability and validity of the MAT tool when used to assess chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting in clinical settings, and confirm the cross-cultural transferability of the MAT scale. The second phase is due to be completed soon. Work from this strand has informed current clinical guidelines on managing antiemetic use in radiotherapy management, paediatrics, and in managing anticipatory nausea and vomiting. We contribute to the work of the MASCC international expert committee on antiemetics, leading the anticipatory nausea and vomiting subgroup.
