Evidence-Based Practice and Service Evaluation in Speech and Language Therapy CPD unit

Evidence-Based Practice and Service Evaluation in Speech and Language Therapy (CPD unit)

This distance learning course offers master's-level training in evidence-based practice methodologies for speech and language therapists and other health professionals.

Course overview

Our online Evidence-Based Practice and Service Evaluation in Speech and Language Therapy CPD unit has been designed and tailored for speech and language therapy (SLT) professionals.

The Manchester course is unique because part of the unit is tailored specifically to service-level evaluations in health, education and social care.

It offers the chance to tailor learning to your own needs - as well as to the needs of the services and populations you serve – before exiting the course with the tools to evaluate your service.

Our postgraduate unit has four parts:

  1. Evidence-based practice: questions and scope
  2. Methods and outcomes in evidence-based practice
  3. Locating and evaluating evidence
  4. Service/practice-level evidence and implementation.

Part 4 is tailored to SLT service-level evaluations in health, education and social care and offers students the chance to tailor learning to their needs and the needs of the services and populations they serve.

The course will involve both summative and formative assessment. Formative assessment will take place throughout the first three parts, and successful completion of a written 4,000-word assignment in Part 4 concludes the course, awarding you 15 credits. You will receive written feedback within one month of the submission deadline.

Throughout the course, you will be asked to reflect and consider how the principles and methods of evidence-based practice can be applied to your caseload. You will learn how to generate evidence in your own locality and speciality, supporting your existing knowledge of 'what works'.

The assignment task is an investigation chosen by you, with support from your online tutor, and will be directly applicable to your caseload.

The course will be delivered online, including 150 hours of study within the Blackboard e-learning platform using a range of audio and video presentations, online learning tasks including quizzes, reflection tasks, discussion boards and wikis, and reading materials.

You will be able to access the materials throughout the course and will have full access to e-resources from The University of Manchester Library.
