The Dean's Prize for Clinicians
The Dean's Prize for Clinicians is a fellowship scheme with the goal of preparing excellent candidates for clinical intermediate or senior fellowships from UK national funding bodies such as the Medical Research Council (MRC), Wellcome Trust (WT) or National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
This award is run by the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health in conjunction with our MAHSC Partner Trusts.
The call for The Dean’s Prize for Clinicians closed in November 2017.
Preparing for intermediate fellowship
- have completed doctoral studies, ideally under the auspices of an MRC, Wellcome Trust or NIHR doctoral fellowship or equivalent;
- have undertaken postdoctoral research, for instance while holding an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer post; most likely have reached the end of your clinical specialist training;
- recognise the need for a further period of up to 24 months following completion of clinical specialty training to maximise your momentum for applications at intermediate/clinician-scientist fellowship level.
At all stages you will have demonstrated excellent productivity with research outputs at internationally leading standards.
You may have secured additional funds such as an Academy of Medical Sciences starter grant.
Overseas applicants will be considered, but must show comparable markers of success and be eligible for clinical service commitment within the UK National Health Service (NHS).
Preparing for senior fellowship
You will have completed doctoral training as above and, in addition, have undertaken very substantial postdoctoral research with a number of research outputs at internationally leading standards.
You are likely to have previously held or be coming to the end of an intermediate clinician-scientist fellowship from a major UK funder such as the MRC, WT or NIHR.
Overseas applicants will be considered, but must show comparable markers of success and be eligible for clinical service commitment within the UK NHS.
Non-medical clinicians are welcome to apply, but must meet the eligibility criteria from major funders, such as the MRC, for holding a clinical research fellowship (i.e. rather than being directed to non-clinical schemes).
The University of Manchester will support your basic salary up to 0.5 full time equivalent (FTE) with the remaining 0.5 FTE made up from the most appropriate NHS partner of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC). This will be determined post-interview.
