Research theme: improving services for people with mental illness

Our service delivery theme aims to produce rigorous and relevant evidence to improve the quality, accessibility and organisation of mental health services for people living with serious mental illness.

We are involved in many types of research including primary research and evidence synthesis.

We collaborate with a wide variety of key stakeholders including service users and carers, health professionals, NHS managers, Clinical Research Networks (CRNs), and the public.

A current example of our work is our NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) Programme grant EQUIP (Enhancing the Quality of User-Involvement in Mental Health Care-planning; RP-PG-1210-12007). Through this work, we have developed an evidence-based training package for community mental health teams, delivered by users and carers to help staff increase user involvement in the care planning process.

We have also developed a new patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) to help quantify the level of involvement that service users have. We are currently evaluating the clinical and cost effectiveness of our training package to determine the impact that it has had.
