We take part in events and festivals in the Manchester area. Through our Artefact Talks event series we invite historians, practitioners and artists to present their research around objects in the collection. Everyone is welcome to attend these events.
A Healthy Profit at Quarry Bank Mill, 19 October 2019 - 19 April 2020
The exhibition incorporates research in optometry at The University of Manchester to explore how the workers at Quarry Bank experienced health and illness, accident or injury, pregnancy and childbirth. Objects on loan include a teaching model of a human brain, a Leech Jar and a ceramic inhaler.
Instrumental Change at the Manchester Central Library, Wednesday 11 December
This one-day pop-up exhibition was organised by MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies students, in collaboration with the Museum of Medicine and Health. The exhibition focused on the materiality of medical instruments and how this has changed through time. Exploring key themes of functionality and sustainability, Instrumental Change invited visitors to challenge their own assumptions about the medical world.
Deaf Education and Audiology: a journey through artefacts, archives and creativity at Manchester Central Library, 14 October - 14 December 2019
We loaned our hearing aid collection to this exhibition, which was part of the 100-year anniversary celebrations of deaf education and audiology at The University of Manchester. The exhibition provoked questions around how we understand, collect and communicate D/deafness in a dominant hearing world. It was curated by Dr Jenna C Ashton, Lecturer and Programme Director of Heritage Studies at The University of Manchester.
