“All the staff at Xaverian were really enthusiastic and helpful, and we had regular meetings with the Foundation Year tutor to make sure we were settling into university and coping with the course.

“I am much more focused on my studies this year because I've had an extra year to get used to uni life and all the excitement that can bring. One of the great things when I started the first year was having so many friends on the course that I had made on the Foundation Year.”

Naomi Lowe-Lennon (Physiology student)

“I made great friends on the foundation year. That first year at the college was a cushion into the real world of university and I'm very glad I did it.”

Evanthia Anastasiou (Biology student)

Course description

Our BSc Biosciences with a Foundation Year (formerly known as Life Sciences with a Foundation Year) course enables all of our biological and biomedical sciences undergraduate courses to be studied with a foundation year if you do not have a science background or the appropriate entry qualifications.

Taught by Xaverian College  close to the University campus, the foundation year provides the necessary academic background in biology, chemistry and mathematics to prepare you for study on any one of our  biological  or  biomedical  science courses.

There is also a complementary programme of tutorials, seminars and laboratory practicals at the main University campus.

Successful completion of the foundation year allows you direct entry onto any of our three- or four-year degree courses.

Open days

The University runs several open days per year, in which we take part.

We also operate campus tours which are available most days. These are with a student ambassador who can tell you all about life at The University of Manchester. It may also be possible to meet with admissions staff (subject to staff availability). These tours are open to anybody thinking of applying to us for any of the biological sciences. Family and friends are welcome too.

To book, please contact our Admissions Office on +44 (0)161 275 5032 or email ug.biosciences@manchester.ac.uk .
