Professor Karl Kadler was appointed as Research Domain Director for Cellular and Developmental Systems in October 2017.

He is a Professor of Biochemistry and Director of the Wellcome Centre for Cell-Matrix Research.

Professor Kadler completed his PhD studies at The University of Manchester, where he developed computer-based and electron microscope methods for examining the structure of collagen fibrils.

After his PhD, Professor Kadler moved to Dr Darwin Prockop’s laboratory at Rutgers Medical School, New Jersey, USA and later to Thomas Jefferson Medical College, where he showed how mutations in collagen genes in people with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) and the Ehlers Danlos syndrome change the structure of collagen.

In 1989, he was awarded a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellowship in Basic Biomedical Sciences at The University of Manchester. He is currently funded as a Wellcome Investigator to study how the circadian clock regulates the health of connective tissues that are constructed from collagen fibrils.
